How do you choose the right knitting needle size?
Not only do the units of measurement differ internationally, but needle sizes are also sometimes specified differently .
In Germany and many European countries, knitting needles are given in millimeters (mm) , while in the USA and Great Britain needle sizes are given as numbers .
Basic rule:
- The needle size always depends on the yarn , not the other way around.
- The yarn label will give you a recommendation, e.g. needle size 4–5 mm .
- This information ensures that the stitch pattern is neither too loose nor too tight.

How exactly do you find the right needle?
1. Pay attention to the running length:
- Fine yarns (e.g. 160–200 m/50 g) = 3–4 mm
- Medium yarns (120–150 m/50 g) = 4–5 mm
- Thicker yarns (80–100 m/50 g) = 5–7 mm
2. Knit a gauge swatch:
Always knit a small swatch to check if the size is correct.
3. Choose comfortable needles:
- Wood or bamboo : warm, light and ideal for beginners (such as the bamboo circular knitting needles from addi)
- Metal : smooth running, good for fast knitting (such as the Colibri needle set from addi )
- Circular knitting needles : suitable for almost any project, not just for circular knitting (such as Scandinavian-designed birchwood needles from Lykke )
