DIY: Easy knitting hat – perfect gift for Advent and Christmas
Share
A hand-knitted hat is one of the most beautiful and personal gifts you can give. It's quick to make, customizable, and ideal for the cold season. Whether as a Christmas present, a small token of appreciation during Advent, or a handmade highlight in an Advent calendar – a well-fitting hat is always a hit.
To make getting started easy, we recommend yarns that are easy to work with, pleasantly warm, and create a beautiful stitch pattern. At Handarbeiten.de you'll find carefully selected wool qualities in many colors.
Which yarns are suitable for knitted hats?
Yarns suitable for hats are:
- Keep warm
- are elastic
- offer a soft feel
- and result in a clear mesh pattern
Our yarn recommendations:
Austermann Merino 105
Soft, warming merino wool with excellent shape retention.
Ideal for simple hat designs.
Austermann Merino 160 EXP
Slightly lighter, very soft and skin-friendly.
Perfect for finer, close-fitting hats.
Oyster Man Briana
Alpaca wool and merino wool combine quality and cuddliness – ideal for warm knitted items.
Austermann Kid Silk
Can be used as a supplementary yarn for a fine, elegant fluff.
Austermann Alpaca Love
Unparalleled softness and warmth - cotton-alpaca blend with color gradient .
Step-by-step basic instructions (short, universal)
- Measure head circumference (e.g. 54–56 cm).
- Cast on the number of stitches according to the gauge (e.g. approx. 80–100 stitches for needle size 4–5).
- Knit 4–6 cm in ribbing (knit 1, purl 1).
- Continue knitting straight until the desired height is reached (approx. 18–22 cm).
- For the decreases, knit stitches together regularly until only a few stitches remain.
- Pull the thread through, sew it in place, and you're done.
The result: A timeless, wearable hat – handmade and personal.
