Pilling vermeiden: Darauf solltest Du beim Garnkauf achten - Handarbeiten

Preventing pilling: What to look out for when buying yarn

Do you know that feeling? Your new knitwear looks beautiful – and after a few wears, small knots form on the surface. This phenomenon, called pilling, is annoying but often avoidable.

The good news: You can do a lot right when buying yarn.

What exactly is pilling?

Pilling occurs when loose fibers, due to friction, detach from the knit, felt together, and form small knots. Areas subject to high wear, such as sleeves, side panels, or shoulders, are particularly affected.

The crucial factor is: What fibers and what processing are in the yarn?

1. Pay attention to fiber quality

Not all wool pills to the same extent.

Less prone are:

  • Long-staple fibers (e.g., high-quality merino wool)
  • Tightly twisted yarns
  • Cotton
  • Linen
  • Blends with stabilizing fibers

More prone are:

  • Very soft, short-fiber qualities
  • Loosely spun yarns
  • Fluffy effect yarns

The longer and more stable the fibers, the lower the risk.

2. Check the yarn construction

Look at how the yarn is processed:

  • Tightly twisted = more robust
  • Loose & fluffy = more delicate
  • Multi-ply twisted = usually more durable

A dimensionally stable yarn not only ensures an even stitch pattern but also reduces abrasion.

3. Consider the intended use

A sweater for everyday wear requires a different yarn than a airy summer scarf.

For heavily worn items, suitable options include:

  • Wool blends with polyamide
  • High-quality merino yarns with good twist
  • Durable natural fibers

For accessories, it can be softer and fluffier.

4. Don't underestimate care

Proper care also helps prevent pilling:

  • Wash gently
  • Avoid friction
  • Dry garments flat
  • Carefully remove knots with a fabric shaver

Conclusion

Pilling can never be completely ruled out – but you can significantly reduce it.

When buying yarn, pay attention to:

✔ high-quality, long-staple fibers
✔ stable twist
✔ appropriate quality for your project

This will keep your knitwear beautiful for longer.
